Alternator Removal

Post by aj81spider »

I've gotten most of the way toward removing the alternator, but have hit a roadblock. The upper bolt is out, the wires are disconnected, and the lower nut is off the bolt. However the lower bolt is not moving. It will not even turn when I put a wrench on it on the other side of the alternator. There seems to be something still on the bolt on the nut side of the alternator. I pried a little at it with a screwdriver and it doesn't move easily. I didn't use a lot of force as I didn't want to screw up something I didn't know about. I've attached a picture of the nut end of the bolt.

The fluid on the oil filter is PB blaster - it took two days of soaking to get the nut to move.

Any thoughts on how to get that bolt out?

Thanks for your help,

A.J.

corrosion can cause that bolt to seize to the alt and bracket

Just a couple ideas... & keep soaking it. I'm sure Mark's right about it being seized by corrosion.

Can you get a good wack at it? That might break it free.

Or a pry bar between the block and alternator. Get the alternatior to move up and down and that will free the bolt.

Does the car run? Running it without the adjusting bolt in place, the vibration may break the bolt free.

Finally I'm thinking about big C-clamp type of thing with a socket over the bolt head to allow it to move and the other side of the clamp on the end of the bolt. Still you'd have to turn the thing. Probably there's a tool around for this the real mechanics around here would know about it.

Good luck and let us know.

The car does run (at least till I started working on this!) so I'll try that. The C-Clamp idea is a good one. I do some woodworking and will have to check if I have one big enough.

I'll soak it all week (too busy this week to get to it) and try on the weekend.

Thanks for the suggestions!
