My cooling system is being VERY UNCOOL!

Hello all,

So I get it.....Car starts to run hot. (not quite into the redzone, but close enough!)

I feel for the thermostat, and yes she be cool on that lower hose. So replace the T-stat....

Take her to a local mechanic to follow up with a radiator flush and proper top-off with new coolant.

We notice that she still runs hot, so now the temp sensor down by the radiator is replaced.

Runs fine for awhile( meaning, whe she goes slightly past 190F, the fan does kick on, and all's well.)

Overheating AGAIN!

And yes, check under the hood, and AGAIN WITH THAT THERMOSTAT lower hose being cool.....!

Bad Thermostat (purchased from IAP) or what else am I missing here???

FYI, I've had the radiator re-cored twice, last time being somewhere in the past three years.

if the bottom hose is cool then your thermostadt is not opening. are you sure you have it oriented correctly. did you drill a bleeder hole in the stadt.

Do a search on burping or bleeding the cooling system. Maybe there's an air lock that's affecting the tstat.

T-stat probably not burped. A common thing to forget while burping the system is to open your heater valve. Other than that the trick mentioned above about drilling a small hole in the T-stat does help. Or put a flush kit in the top/long heater hose.

I do appreciate all the input...

I fear that I may have been remiss in assuring the heater valve was in the open position prior to bleeding the system. But nonetheless, it was working fine for awhile????

I shall attempt another bleed and report back.

Now as far as parts are concerned.....Just recieved SoCalMark's Super Header!!!

Now, that's some parts worth their price! Can't wait!!

I have had the same problem with my 1979 fiat spider, I've tried everything that this an other websites have suggested with no luck. Have you found a solution? Anyone out there who can help?

If you own a spider trhis is one of the best tools you can buy:

With this bleeding funnel, no more mess and you can fill the level high enough to bleed even the spider 2000's no more issues, jacking, coolant tees etc. It makes life so much easier.

If you have everything else checked and sorted you should look for constant bubbles in your radiator (this funnel makes that easy) as you may have a headgasket leak from the combustion chamber to the coolant. A slight one will not cause clouds of white smoke but it will over heat the car by pushing combustion gasses in to the head while pulling water in.

The cylinder head will get hot reading an overheat and the fan won't come on till way too late as the system is air locked. You can also see this looking at the piston tops and seeing most of them nicely carboned up and one will be clean aluminum as the water ingested and burned will have steam cleaned the top of it.

Cars that are resurrected after sitting years should have their head gaskets re-torqued before running to help prevent this sort of thing. PB
