Empi 32/36 install
Empi 32/36 install
1979 Spider 2000, not fuel injected, stock carburetor...hasn't run for nine years...my neighbor gave it to me and would love to see it run. New battery, plugs, distributor cap. Starts but carb must be all coked up. I have a new Empi 32/36 carb from Allison's, here are my questions: New carb has a fuel inlet, but as far as I can see no "fuel return" line like the stock carb. Do I need to hook up a fuel return line out of the new carb? I'm hoping to remove most/all of the old emissions hoses. there is a vacuum hose from the distributor, should I hook this up to the new carb? Where? Also, there was a tube going to the old carb's fast idle diaphragm...hook up to the new carb? By the way, I'm in Arizona not California! Looks like the throttle linkage will need some modifying, I can do that.
Re: Empi 32/36 install
return line is not used, yes, connect your vac adv hose to the carb. There is a vacuum nipple just above the idle mixture screw. You need to mount a ball stud on the new carb for the linkage
Re: Empi 32/36 install
Thanks, and I have poked around here and found lots of info on this carb swap. What a great resource this is! I have a day off tomorrow and it would be great to actually be able to drive the car, put a big smile on my neighbor's face. He bought the car about two years old and his daughter drove it thru high school and college. He has watched me mess around with a couple old Chevies and now a 63 Plymouth Fury 4-door that I'm tryng to air-condition on the cheap with a yard sale under-dash unit from the 1960's. I know he'd get a kick out of seeing the Spider resurrected and running. Seems to be a solid car, no real rust issues that I can see...he parked it in his carport in about the year 2000 he thinks. Interior is really trashed but the paint is actually not bad, except the tail of the car got enough sun to be pretty spider-checked. Thanks again for the help, I'm going to just loop the water right back around and put the carb on with a spacer, looks like the throttle linkage is the trickiest deal and I think I can get it to work. I shall report back soon!
Re: Empi 32/36 install
looping the two water hoses together works fine and gives a spot to bleed air from the cooling system. You can remove the throttle lever with the ball stud from the old carb and attach it to the new one for an easy linkage connection. Use the electrical connection from the old idle solenoid for the electric choke
Re: Empi 32/36 install
It went very well, runs waaaaay better than with the old varnished-up carb. I want to make a nicer throttle linkage eventually, but the tip about the old carb giving up its ball-stud lever was great. Now I'm thinking the car is a keeper. Thanks for the help. Scott.
