the correct distributer

Post by murrayarnold »

Good day.
I have a 77 spider (cal import) I am not a fiat guru so not up to speed on parts. But I do know I need a new distributer. I am not convinced however that the engine in the car is an original 124 engine. It may be an older 124 one, who knows. This creates an issue with what distributer to order. So what I have is as follows. I have a distributer that inserts to the top of the engine and not the bottom. It has a cap that has the leads coming from the side and not the top. I wouls attach a photo but its been so long since I was on I cant remember how, lol. Any assistance welcome.

the 77 did originally have the dizzy mounted on the exhaust cam housing. However, an earlier distributor that mounts on the block could be used. On the top mount units, if the wires exited the top rather than the side they would contact the hood

I have a distributor 4 sale that would give you elect. points. It's flex distributor. Rare and hard to find. It's in great condition. It came off my 78. Pm me if interested.

Here is a nice electronic distributer that works at 100% on your car just ask for the right model, http://www.123ignitionusa.com/
Your model should be 123\FIAT-TC-A-V (Fiat 124 & 131 with 4-cyl. twin-cam engines)
There is also a information clip on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XcqgLdeRGg

Thats a very good demonstration of the consistancy of the spark between the three types of distributors.

kinda like good - better - best, wonder how biased it is. Still cool though.

agreed regarding the 123 system. Its obviously a promotional video. Having said that it does look efficient. some independant testimonials, proper test results and prices would be usefull.
