Wrestling with a new alternator I seem to have broken off some type of sensor, on the block/bracket that the bottom alternator bolt goes thru.
What came off was a black/yellow striped wire w/ spade terminal, connected to a tapered brown plastic cylinder ~.50 diameter and ~.75" long (to broken edge), with a copper spring inside. What was left on the bracket was a nut (~22mm) with a white plastic cylinder with a little nub in the center. I'm thinking it might be an oil pressure sensor, since it is right above the oil filter - ???
(Looking thru IAP it appears it might be the oil pressure light switch.)
Anyone know 2) for sure what it is, and 2) can temporarily drive the car without it?
Oh, and why is it so much harder to get the new alternator in than it was to take the old one out? They look the same diameter...

providing it is the oil pressure sensor, which feeds the oil pressure idiot light.....you are o.k. to drive providing it was not broken off so far into the fixture that it leaks oil.
i'd rather play it safe and get the new oil pressure sensor installed than take a chance of loosing oil pressure and not knowing.
