EGR Elimination On 2000 Head With 78 1800 Manifold?

Post by WBPDX »

I've been searching around for a few days now, and I can't find exactly what I need to do to switch to a 1800 intake manifold with my 2000 head.

A little about my car - it is a 1979, with most of the emissions stuff already tossed, and a ADHA that I already got rid of. I will be going to the EMPI 32/36 DFEV.

I bought a 1978 1800 intake manifold; I didn't want one from so new a car, but that was all that was available on eBay at the time. I paid too much for it because I didn't know about this site yet.

I have read that exhaust gases are circulated to the intake side inside the head. What do I block off on the exhaust side to keep that from happening, and creating an exhaust leak? I am not sure if it is stock for 79, or relevant, but my exhaust manifold is the 4-into-2.

Thanks!

As an added bonus, here is the color I am home-painting my project (Interlux brightsides custom mixed by me, sprayed through a cheap turbine sprayer. This is just part of the engine bay as a quick test.)

the 79 exhaust has an extra tube that attaches near the front of the cylinder head. You can remove that tube and plug it at the exhaust manifold or change the exhaust to any other year manifold. You would have to get the head pipe to match the manifold though. You can then leave the hole in the head open, it's merely a crossover

Thanks Mark! I see exactly what you are talking about; it is pretty obvious now. I just needed someone to tell me.

(I do have the exhaust manifold from the same 78, but it is the 4-1 style, so I won't be using it.)

The cleanest way to do this is install a fuel injected head. It actually work quite nicely with a 1756 block, 1756 manifold, 1608 exhaust manifold, 32ADFA and a 1608 single point distributor. One of the best combnations I've found and believe me I've tried them all.

I won't be doing that, but thanks for the advice. I could care less about performance; I am going for cheap and simple, with an eye on emissions (a paradox, I know.)
