One more question...
What are these? The one on the left with the ratty foam covering was connected to the airbox or intake manifold, I forget which, and the one on the right with the two smaller hoses was disconnected with one of the lines plugged. I'd like to know what the function of both of these is.
When switching to the new intake manifold, carb, and fancy air cleaner, what should be done with these in terms of capping or connection?

All that helps the inside of your engine (other than the combustion chamber) to breath (crank breather), some people have them going to air with a filter, however you may smell the oil fumes, it is best to run it back into your carbie, that way the engine burns up the fumes....

"The one on the right".... Is the mechanical fuel pump that a P.O. must have disconnected when the electric pump was installed. It could be removed and the remaining hole blanked off.
Cheers,
Dave.

Thanks!
Odd about the fuel pump. Did the 79 come stock with a mechanical fuel pump or is this bottom end out of a different year?
(By the way, I the bores on the other two cylinders are great as well)

If I remember correctly, prior to FI models, the only spider that came stock with a electric fuel pump was around 1974.
And most modifications replacing the mechanical fuel pump with an electrical fuel pump are hooked up so that the pump is on when ever the ignition is on.

Back when I had a 79 Spider 2000, I removed the mechanical fuel pump and went to an electric wired to a switched 12V. I was fighting a recurring vapor lock condition. Bayless (back in the day) used to sell a block-off plate for removing the mechanical pump.
Re: 79 With Exhaust Smoke - Photos - Newbie Needs Advice
Excellent! You guys are great. Indeed, I could tell the pump was wired up after the fact, I just wasn't sure if the pump was new or the wiring was new. The pump is quite noisy, but I guess considering the location and the lack of sound deadening, that is to be expected.
I will be making a little block off plate.
Getting the 'extra' stuff out of the engine bay will definitely help ease working on the car.

That big hose with ratty foam needs to run back to air cleaner housing. Do you have a stock filter??
Re: 79 With Exhaust Smoke - Photos - Newbie Needs Advice
As I stated, I will be going to after market filter (replacing the air cleaner housing) with the new carb.majicwrench wrote:That big hose with ratty foam needs to run back to air cleaner housing. Do you have a stock filter??

While removing the auxiliary drive pulley with my impact gun, my strap wrench slipped and spun the crap out of the assembly. I had already removed the fuel pump; based on the reading I have done, I think I am okay? Did I damage anything? Do I need to remove the cover to check? I was removing the pulley because I realized my front crank seal is leaking badly.

Also, any tips for stuck valve-keepers? I am having a heck of a time getting the valve keeper\end\washer separated from the spring so I can actually get things apart. So far, I have only gotten one assembly apart, and it took a lot of swearing. My valve spring compressor does it's job fine, but the springs\valve seem stuck to the retainers.
The good news is the one I did get apart had a TOTALLY toasted valve stem seal, so that is probably where a good bit of smoke was coming from...

Anyone?
I am really concerned about the Aux shaft. I need an answer before I do any more work! I think it is fine, but I am not the expert here!

Spinning the aux shaft will not hurt anything.
Valve keepers, smack the retainer with a small hammerr before using your spring compressor, this will help loosen everything up.
