Question: 78 Spider Mirror Removal

Post by Boydness »

How do you remove the interior mirror mounted on the windshield frame of a 78 Fiat Spider?
There appears to be 2 bolts/studs holding the mirror bracket in place, although I see no obvious way to remove the mirror. The mirror is a good working day/night flip type and I would prefer not to damage it.

the mirror snaps onto the base with a ball/socket type of arrangement.

I hope you are talking about the stock mirror and not a very good looking aftermarket replacement.

Mark is correct for the stock mirror.

How do you remove the portion of base/support that is attached to the windshield frame?
The only other mirror and support that I have removed from a Fiat had two screws that were plainly visible. This mirror seems to have a support that encloses whatever is mounting it to the windshield frame. There seems to be a spacer between the windshield frame and the bracket/support. Do I have to remove the windshield to de-installed the mirror bracket/support assembly?

The mirror just hangs on the bracket. I can't remember if you have to force it up or down to dislodge it, but when the mirror is removed, the screws holding the bracket on will be visible.

I generally gently push down on the mirror until i see separation between the mirror and the base.

then i gently stick a thin blade screwdriver in the gap and pry. it gives way quite easily.
