Engine Dies

Post by jsdieter »

My 78 spider runs and drives fine but when I come to a stop the engine dies. The timing is correct and all the gaps are right. The ignition system is all new. Could it be a fuel problem?

There is a idle cut-off solenoid on the left side of the carb. That needs power to it, otherwise fuel flow thru the idle circuit is nil causing it to stall. With the key on, engine off, disconnect the wire to that solenoid and listen for a click when you reattach it. No click, no idle
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!

I think Mark's on the right track.

There is a check valve between the booster and the intake manifold. On my '78 it's right where the hose connects to the booster. On my earlier cars it's in-line (in the middle of the hose). The in-line kind can be installed backwards and make the engine stop every time you step on the brakes.

Seems to me you could have the same problem if the check valve is bad.

A way to test is to remove the hose and block off the connection to the intake manifold. You won't have power brakes, so be careful. If the engine no longer stops when applying the brakes you'll know it's the valve or the booster, rather than carburetor or ignition.

I have the same problem with my '82 - FI - auto. I changed the brake booster which was hissing. I also diconnected and plugged the vac adv. The car runs fine - but when I get to a stop the idle slowly decreases and the engine dies. If I put the car in neutral it will idle fine. Any ideas??

Sorry for the late reply, I knew it wasnt the brake booster because that already happened to me (scary ride home). I cleaned off the idle solenoid and that did it. I have also had the issue that no matter what i do it starts to miss around 4000. The point gap is perfect and the spark plugs are all correct. could it be related to idle solenoid or accelerator pump? Thanks
