The other day as I was driving to work I pushed the clutch in to shift and as I released it the return pressure on my highly calibrated size 13 felt a lot lighter than usual. It was noticeable to the point that I wasn't sure the the pedal came up at all until the clutch grabbed and I kept going. After that everything was fine except for the soft pedal.
Today I was able to get underneath and confirm that the fork return spring had snapped. The problem now is that it is gone except for the remains of the hook on the fork.
So my question is: Is there anything special as far as spring size or tension I should be worried about or can I just run down to AutoZone or even Lowes and get something the right length with a reasonable tension?

Re: Clutch fork return spring
Joel,
Dont know if you fixed this but I would just order from IAP or one of the other vendors pretty cheap $15 and you know you are getting the right part. I just replaced mine with the new clutch job.
Thanks

Re: Clutch fork return spring
the spring on the fork only needs to be strong enough to pull the release bearing back from the pressure plate fingers

Re: Clutch fork return spring
Lots of cars being parted out here that will have that spring...... just a suggestion.
But then again don't want to take anything away from the vendors that help keep our spiders running.

Re: Clutch fork return spring
There are two springs in the clutch system. One big high tension spring and a "S" hook connected to the pedal, this is the pedal return spring and is best to have the original spring and "S" hook.
There is a low tension spring and "C" shaped hook down on the side of the trans that returns the clutch throwout arm/fork. This spring can be a generic spring and a homemade "C" shaped hook, as long as it has enough travel without causing a permanent deformation to the spring.

Re: Clutch fork return spring
I went to Ace Hardware and found a spring that was close to the right length and put it on. It's not as heavy but it does the job.
