Removing fuel injector hose

How do you remove the soft hose from the rail? Is there an easier way than digging it our from behind the metal collar with a pick?
Remind me again why I like Fiats?

Never mind. I found if you yank on something hard enough you can usually get it off. Just not much room to work with on an X19.

are you trying to replace the hoses with the rail in place?

Yeah. I really don't want to yank that fuel injection crap off just to replace a little ole hose. It's the feed line, not the hoses to each injector.

Okay, got it off. I used a utility knife, sliced the hose from the metal collar down past the nipple. I then took my brand new Christmas present out of the package (right angle pick) and worked it under the collar, twisting the hose back and forth and didn't get anywhere. I think it was glued on from the factory, so I cut the damn hose, heated the nipple and hose until the rubber melted away, then I was able to pick the rest out from under the collar. Thank goodness the end to the injector rail came off with no heat.
Got the new hose on without removing the injector system. One good thing about having small hands I guess.

my dad had an x/19 for many years (come to think of it, my mother had a 850 spider as well) and i could never figure out how people worked on the engine. i mostly figured that leprechauns were real and into italian car repair

I used an exacto knife to cut under the "hats".

I'm getting conflicting opinions on the type of hose to use. I went to an import parts store and got 7mm cloth braided fuel injection line good for over 125 psi. I have it on the car and they aren't leaking and are nice and tight. Some are suggesting going with a 5/16" and clamps vs the original design. What do you guys think?

The fittings on the rail are barbed and were made to work with a braided hose without clamps. It's called a "socket-less" fitting and they are usually found in low pressure (under 500 psi) applications. The braid in the hose (I think 52 degree as opposed to 45 degree) is designed to constrict the ID under pressure creating a good seal. Most people outside of the hydraulics industry aren't familliar with this type of conection and often add a hose clamp for secrity. Here's the rub; If you don't know that the hose is specifically a "socket-less" hose, then best to assume it is a standard weave and add a clamp.

The original hose had a rubber outer shell to it. It seems to be on there good. I'll let Ron check it when he comes home.

Where would you get this braided hose? Is it cloth braided or stainless? I am a bit confused. It seems the original set up worked pretty darn well, but it seems nobody trusts it. If it's because of the hose being used, I could see that. I can tell you the hose I installed sure doesnt want to come off.

I use a Dremel type tool with a small ball bit to cut the hose inside the flanged washer. I takes out almost an 1/8" of material and it will cut all the way to the end of the hose. Care is needed so as not to damage the barbs. Smells a lot so I don't do it in the kitchen.
The hose I use is available from McMaster Carr their PN 5645K23 and is rated at 300PSI.
I reuse the original flared washers.
Just to be safe I install a pinch clamp on the hose just above the washer McMAster Carr PN 5435K15
I apply Silicone to the barb and heat the new hose with an electric heat gun to make the hose slip over the barbs easier.
Even with out the pinch clam installed I have tried to pull off a new hose and they won't come off with out slicing them.

this is very helpful. I have some Flextral Grip-loc hydraulic 5/16" hose good for 300 psi that I started to use, then the conflicting stories started so I went and bought 7mm cloth braided fuel injector hose. It doesn't fit at tightly to the metal collar, but it fits very snug on the fitting. I had to use a heat gun to get it on there. I might just add a couple little clamps and be done with it.

Denise,if you can, try and source the clamps for fuel injector hose. If you have done so already,no worries then. The "normal" hose clamps can crimp/pinch the hose and you might not have a good conection and end up with a dangerous drip.
